The Sea Of Ice (Das Eismeer) Also Known As The Wreck Of Hope, Was Painted By Caspar David Friedrich Between 1823 And 1824. To Add To Further Confusion, He Was Originally Showed This Piece With The Title An Idealized Scene Of An Arctic Sea, With A Wrecked Ship On The Heaped Masses Of Ice, But In His Will, Friedrich Referenced The Painting As Ice Picture, The Disaster-Stricken North Pole Expedition. The Different Titles Refer To Another Painting By Friedrich, Now Missing, Titled A Wrecked Ship Off The Coast Of Greenland In The Moonlight, Own Invention. Both Paintings Were Commissioned By Johann Gottlob Von Quandt For A Collection To Symbolize North And South Europe. Friedrich Was Given The North And Another Artist Was To Paint The South. Sadly, This Composition Was Seen As Being Too Radical For It’S Time And Went Unsold Until After Friedrich’S Death. This Is Mostly Because The Subject Of The Painting (Being A Shipwreck) Was Not Really What Was Considered Visually Appealing. Today The Original Is Housed At The Museum Kunsthalle Hamburg, In Hamburg, Germany.
